Today on Family Foodie Featured Friday: Amy from kimchi MOM
Who is Amy: I’m Amy Kim, founder and editor of the blog, kimchi MOM. My mom was the inspiration for this blog. She had dinner ready for our family 5:00 sharp every evening when I was growing up. Now that I am at home with the kids full-time, I want to try to do what my mom did for years. Maybe not get dinner ready by 5:00 sharp, but at least have a home cooked meal on the table!
I try to cook with whole foods and make a concerted effort to avoid processed foods. Dinners are usually Korean or Korean-inspired dishes and that is what you’ll see most of time on my blog. But I’ll throw in a surprise every now and then to keep you on your toes!
I’m a Korean American mom of two, a wife, a sister, a daughter, a designer, and I eat kimchi with everything.
Her favorite #SundaySupper theme so far: My favorite Sunday Supper theme was the one honoring what would have been Julia Child’s 100th birthday. The recipes I featured were her classic Blanquette de Veau and Concombres au buerre (veal stew and baked cucumbers) from Mastering the Art of French Cooking. I loved this theme because it brought back great childhood memories and reminded me of how she was truly an inspiration. Preparing this meal was an all-day affair and I was truly at peace in my kitchen that day. I was also pretty happy with the way the photos turned out for this post.
Her most popular #SundaySupper post: I have been a member of the Sunday Supper Movement since June 2012. My most popular Sunday Supper post (based on pageviews) was the first one I participated in – Father’s Day. It featured one of my and my dad’s favorite dish – bibim naeng myun – a Korean spicy cold noodle dish. And apparently it’s a favorite for many others!
Fun Fact: A little known tidbit about me is that I’m a figure skating judge. I grew up figure skating and I wasn’t the best skater, but loved it nonetheless. About 10 years ago, I decided I wanted to give back to the sport and worked on getting my judging appointments. Judging for US Figure Skating is ALL voluntary and unpaid at ALL levels (remember the bribing scandal during the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City?). I am an active member of my local club, Essex Figure Skating Club of NJ, and you can also find me on the ice when I have a spare hour or two during the week. I primarily judge compulsory tests – tests that skaters are required to take in order to advance. Being a judge is fun and challenging, and I’ve met such a great diverse group of people from all over. Kind of like my experience with Sunday Supper!

October 26, 2013 at 1:38 pmSo cool to learn more about you, Ames. I had no idea you were a figure skater and now judge. That’s awesome! My mom was the same as yours – she worked full time but she always had a delicious, healthy, home cooked meal for us every day at 5:30 p.m. She also got up at 5:00 a.m. to make lunch for everyone. Thank goodness for moms. I just know that your kids love and adore you for everything you do for them!

October 27, 2013 at 3:43 amI love that you decided to get involved by being a volunteer judge, Amy. It just goes to show that our passions can still be followed, even if it’s in a non-competitive way. I am sure you are an inspiration to many young skaters, especially your two adorable girls. And to think that I have an Amy Kim original designed logo on my blog! I had no idea you had designed it for Sunday Supper. That is so cool!
