I can still remember the first time I heard a Cuban Sandwich mentioned. I had hesitantly flown to Florida to look for a house with our two year old and six month old in tow. As I drove around with a realtor through Pinellas County looking for the perfect home in a new state to raise my family, a tiny little shack of a place was pointed out to me. Our realtor told me that I had to stop at that sandwich shop to try a Cuban Sandwich.
I looked at her puzzled and asked what was in a cuban sandwich. She chuckled and told me that if you are planning on moving to Tampa Bay, you will be a fan of the cuban sandwich in no time at all. That was 19 years ago and she couldn’t have been more right. Not only am I familiar with this famous sandwich, our family enjoys a good cuban sandwich and I often prepare it at home and pack cuban sandwiches for a picnic or for get togethers.
If you visit in Tampa Bay for more than a day, there is no way that you don’t come across a cuban sandwich. The pork, the ham, the pickles, the mustard and the swiss cheese – All hail, the sandwich that conquered America. We even have an annual Cuban Sandwich Festival where local restaurants compete for the ultimate Cuban Sandwich against Miami restaurants.
Our hometown favorite sandwich is on billboards, at all our local grocers, restaurants and at just about every gas station sandwich shop. This sandwich is near and dear to our hearts and since I had already featured our favorite version a while back, I decided that I wanted to put a twist on an old favorite.
I introduce you to the Cuban Sandwich Dip. A tasty little appetizer that is so easy to whip up and perfect to serve to a crowd. Move over Pepperoni Pizza Dip – we have a new football Sunday appetizer and it is pretty amazing.

- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup shredded pork
- 1 cup ham, chopped or shredded
- ¼ cup honey dijon dressing
- 2 green onions, sliced thin
- 6 ounces swiss cheese grated.
- 2 pickles, sliced thin

- Combine the cream cheese, pork and ham in a large bowl until well blended.
- Line the bottom of an oven proof baking dish or skillet with the cream cheese mixture.
- Layer the honey dijon dressing, green onions and swiss cheese.
