Family Foodie Featured Friday: Country Girl in the Village

By FamilyFoodie 13 Comments

I’m very excited to unveil a new weekly feature here on Family Foodie today.  Each Friday, I will be introducing you to a member of the Sunday Supper family.  Let’s get this party started!

Today on Family Foodie Featured Friday: Shannon from Country Girl in the Village

Who is Shannon:  I am a self-proclaimed country girl who moved to town, and I blog at Country Girl in the Village.  I write of small town life, raising my boys, backyard chickens and a large garden. I’m passionate about the farm to table movement and supporting local farmers.  My food philosophy is that simple, fresh ingredient make the best dishes.  Besides being a foodie, I have an obsession with photographing barns on instagram.

Her favorite #SundaySupper theme so far:  One of my favorite #SundaySuppers was on January 20, 2013. The theme was Retro Recipes. It was so much fun to think back to favorite recipes from the past. Even thought, I love fresh ingredients, I got to go back to a childhood favorite, condensed soup and all. The list of recipes that were shared was an awesome glimpse down memory lane. I enjoyed each and every one. The Twitter Chat that happened later that evening was a ton of fun too.

Her most popular #SundaySupper post:  I have been a member of the #SundaySupper group since December of 2012. It is fitting that my most popular #SundaySupper post is from our Preserving the Harvest #SundaySupper.  I shared my recipe for small batch refrigerator dill pickles. These pickles have a bit of spice to them as I add in fresh jalapenos.

Fun Fact:  Growing up, my grandfather raised beef cows and horses. Helping him with chores are some of my favorite childhood memories. Raising my own children, I have tried to instill in them a love of fresh foods. We like to incorporate shopping at farmers markets as well as growing our own large garden. Growing plants from seeds really gave us a love for knowing where our food comes from. We began canning and preserving our harvest not long after. It seemed to be a natural progression to raising backyard chickens. It has been such a great experience for us. We raise the a variety of chickens for the eggs and for the joy of having them peck about the yard.  You can also find her as a regular contributor to an online chicken keeping magazine, Community Chickens.

I also want to add that, although Shannon wasn’t able to attend the first annual Food and Wine Conference, she was on board from the start, volunteering her time, to promote and help it go over smoothly.

I hope that you enjoyed this new weekly feature on Family Foodie; be sure to come back next week when I feature another member of the Sunday Supper family!
