As much as I am an advocate of relaxing and enjoying each other on Sunday, sometimes there is nothing relaxing about it. We are a busy family and life really gets in the way of my good intentions. This weekend was one of those that I felt like I was on a treadmill and just couldn’t keep up with the pace it was set at. I actually think I may have fallen off the treadmill but got back up so quickly no one noticed… or did they?
Reis had a school dance. I was at a Tech Munch Conference all day Saturday and Prom was on Sunday. As the weekend flew by like a wind storm, the laundry piled up and I started to wonder how I would keep up with it all.
And then Sunday afternoon, right in the middle of #SundaySupper, Ronnie walked in and said, “Did you order the flowers for my date?” It was one of those moments that my heart stopped, I was momentarily paralyzed and realized, I have failed as a Mother. I had picked up the phone at least three times to order the corsage but somehow my adult ADD kicked in and here it is Sunday afternoon, the Prom is in 3 hours and no corsage. How in the world am I going to get a corsage on a Sunday?
I started by calling every florist in the area to no avail. Seriously, why aren’t florists open on Sundays? Then I called all local grocery stores. After many, “our floral designer doesn’t work on Sundays”, I begged and pleaded for someone, anyone to make me a corsage. After all, how hard could it be? You take the flower and stick it on the rubber band thing to go around the wrist and there you have it. I wasn’t being picky, I told them any flower, any color. I did not care what it looked like, I just needed a corsage.
I had to make this right. How could I let my son show up at his date’s house without flowers? The one place that I always seem to find those ingredients for a recipe, that you just can’t find anywhere, is The Fresh Market. I love walking into their store and seeing all the beautiful flowers. I have often thought how smart they are to make that the first thing you see when you walk into their store. It is so welcoming and you feel right at home.
With the tiniest glimmer of hope, I called and asked to speak to a manager. I wasn’t messing around at this point. When he picked up the phone, I said, “I hope you can help me. I am DESPERATE. Is there any way that you could have someone make a corsage for me in the next couple of minutes?” Ever so calmly, he said the word’s that I so needed to hear, “we have some already made.” Before he could finish his sentence, I grabbed my keys and was in my car and on my way. Scared that someone would buy the last corsage before I got there, I asked him to hold it for me. I felt like I had just won the lottery!
When I got there and saw the corsage, I couldn’t believe my luck. I kid you not, it was the prettiest corsage I have ever seen. It was made of miniature white roses and had rhinestone throughout. Instead of that rubber band thing, a rhinestone bracelet held it together. Honestly, just gorgeous.
When I got back home, I calmly said to Ronnie, “See, there is a solution to every problem.” I hope he learned a lesson in all this. Hopefully that lesson isn’t… my mother has lost her mind and I can’t count on her to do anything.
Here’s the best part: When we got to Ronnie’s date’s house and she turned around in her stunning dress, the back had rhinestones that matched perfectly with the corsage. It was a match made in heaven! There really is a solution to every Prom Problem.
Have you ever had a Mom Fail moment like this? I hope I am not the only one.

April 24, 2012 at 10:58 amBeautiful couple! Wonderful corsage, too. My daughter went to only one prom, and the poor young man taking her was literally spinning for weeks, and so was his mom. What color was her dress so they could match the flowers? Where would she like to go before prom? And while he was her date, they weren’t actually dating – they had just decided they wanted to go, and you don’t go to prom alone. She could have had a real suitor, but the way my daughter is wired, other things take precedent. LOL Great story!
