It’s football season … at our house that means it is that time of the year that we are glued to the television watching every game! We love football. I am not sure that there is a bigger football family than us. All our boys are football players, our daughter was a cheerleader and we are that family that is obsessed. And as much as we love the game, we also love football eats. What’s better than a tailgating party with great food?
When I think of tailgating, I always think of my favorite tailgating drink, Sangria. Not just ordinary Sangria but Portuguese Sangria made with Vinho Verde. Have you tried? Oh you must! You are in for a treat.

So what is your favorite team? Well, as far as college football goes, we love the Gators (hence the wine glass). But we have a little problem in our home, our daughter is a Gator but our second born is going to UCF and we may have to be a little open minded to the Knights. Can we do it? Whether we are cheering on the Knights or the Gators, I know one thing for sure… it wouldn’t be a tailgate party without a pitcher of Portuguese Sangria!

- 1 bottle of vinho verde or light white wine
- 1 cup port wine
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 large orange
- 1 apple
- 1 red peach or nectarine
- 1 cinnamon stick
- Cut the orange, apple and peach into small cubes.
- Add the bottle of vinho verde, port wine to a large pitcher.
- In a bowl, combine the sugar orange slices, apple slices and peach slices.
- Combine and add to the pitcher
- Add cinnamon stick and stir well
- Let sit in refrigerator overnight
- Add ice before serving and use a wooden spoon if you would like to keep the fruit from falling in the sagria

September 8, 2013 at 9:56 amI’m down for any type of Sangria! It’s a good thing UCF rarely plays the Gators or things could get ugly 🙂

September 9, 2013 at 8:08 amClerico, white wine sangria, used to be the most popular drink ever, especially in summer. Very similar to this one but without the port. Never heard of vinho verde, but this recipe is calling my name!
