Where To Find Props for My Food Blog #ThriftySaturday

One of my favorite things to do on a Saturday morning is to go to the Farmer’s Market and hit some garage sales or thrift stores.  There is something so therapeutic about heading out and wondering what you will find on any given Saturday.  My kids have gotten in on the fun and now love coming along too.   You will be amazed at the things we pick up for hardly anything at all.

If you have been following me for a while, you may have noticed that I have a China, Silver and Crystal obsession.  You can not believe how many sets I have (just ask my husband)!  The only reason I can afford this habit is that I pick them all up for pennies during my thrifty excursions.

I am constantly asked by my followers, about all my dishes and props that are used in the photographs in my blog.  Many have wondered if my Food Blog “Hobby” wasn’t costing a fortune.   The answer for me is NO.  I do not purchase expensive props and the food the I write about on my blog is food that I serve to my family and friends.

I don’t cook for my blog.  Quite the opposite, my blog is a reflection of our life. 

Soooo… how much can you buy for under $5 and 2 quick garage sale stops?

Old fashioned Colander (with rust on the handle…LOVE!)  .50… Can’t you just see strawberries or green in this colander?

Set of 5 Etched Glass Stem Glasses (why is the one in the back a different shaped differently?) $2.00… I’m thinking Chocolate Mousse, Portuguese Rice Pudding, Ice Cream or Fruit Salad 

Coffee Mugs from Portugal (I buy anything made in Portugal) 2 for $1.00

This Thrifty Saturday total cost $4.75 

Spending the morning outdoors, doing the things you love, with those you love… priceless.

  1. Taking the time to look for thrift shops and yard sales for serve ware is something I’ve been wanting to do since I launched my blog. I love the vintage look of serve ware and it looks especially appealing with the enticing food in many bloggers’ posts. Alas, I’m usually buried under papers to grade. Your post has renewed my resolve to go hunting for vintage pieces this spring! Thanks for the inspiration. Oh, and all that for under five bucks? That’s the best inspiration of all!

  4. My husband quit asking “What took you so long?” when I head out to run an errand. I always add a thrift shop or flea market to the trip. I wish I could get up and out on Saturday morning to hit garage sales, but I love sleeping in too much. 🙂 What great finds!!!!

  6. Its great to hear you say this, as the food I put on my blog is also the food we eat. I have a lot of dishes but also look for sales and visit thrift shops.

  9. Great purchases. We have that in common – I can’t be bothered to cook FOR the blog. It would just be a waste of time and good produce. When I do something different I do post about it, but if I ever posted everything I cook, my blog posts would just be “done that”, “and that again”, “8th time this month”, “there she goes: pasta again…” 😉

  11. Just discovered your blog! I’ll be a frequent visitor. I have a question: Are you super organized when it comes to storing your blog props, dishes, and such? Because I have a similar passion, but I have held back from purchasing more because my MIL was a “collector” (okay, hoarder) with at least seventy sets of china. That along with her other “treasures” made her house a disaster, as you can imagine. I’m scared of going down that road, but I love cooking, entertaining, and tableware.

      So glad you came by. I “try” to stay organized… not always successful but I try! One of the nice things about thrifting for my props is that many times I only want it for one or two shots. When I am done, I will donate it back to the thrift store… Of course, my china, silver and crystal is another story. I just really treasure those!

  13. I love thrift store finds! We recently started going to the flea markets on Saturdays and I am loving all of the things I”m finding! Last weekend I got an old vintage Ball Jar for $5! I looked it up online and it was made between 1922 & 1933. I love it so much! I made a beautiful Flower vase for my kitchen table.

  15. I love knowing that I don’t have to spend a fortune on fancy props for my blog. Since I blog for pleasure and not profit, I just don’t have the funds to do that. I can’t wait to hit up some thrift stores and dollar stores for some fun, therapeutic shopping. And your tip for keeping organized (by re-donating the props after you’ve used them) is genius! I’m in a tiny apartment so there’s no way I could endlessly add to my collection.
