What is the greatest Food Movie ever made?

By FamilyFoodie 13 Comments

I have had the funnest day ever on Twitter.  I am not kidding! Who knew that so many people would come up with so many great answers to this question! It is so true that Food nurtures our souls and so many aspects of our lives! We are more passionate about food than almost anything else.  It all started with one little question… What is the greatest Food Movie ever made?

My all time favorite “Food” Scene has been the same since the first time that I saw this movie…. Of course, this is also one of my all time Favorite Movies!  Being an immigrant, I totally related to this movie the first time that I saw it!

I could remember thinking my friends would think my family was so “weird”…. my Mom always cooked Portuguese Food and in an era where grilled cheese, PB&J & Spaghettios were the norm… Bacalhau, clams, chorizo & Pasteis De Nata were not something my friends were accustomed to eating.

I can still remember bringing Ron home from College for the first time to meet my parents.    Here I was bringing home this blond hair, blue eyed boyfriend to meet my parents who spoke broken English, cooked things he had never heard of and would greet him by kissing him on both sides of his face. Not to mention, they wanted me to marry a nice Portuguese boy!

I’m sure you’ve guessed it by now…. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING is my favorite food movie and the “He don’t eat no meat” is my favorite Food Scene…. I can relate to this movie on so many different levels.  You have no idea!

Every time that I even think about this scene, it just brings me back to my childhood.

What is your all time Favorite Food Movie or Scene?

I drool over the chocolate making scenes in Chocolat. There are all the cooking scenes in Julie & Julia that can make you hungry. It’s Complicated has some good scenes with and about food. I also think of the movie Fatso when he comes home with the birthday cake and he had already eaten a slice. Makes me think of how much I would love to dive into a cake to get a taste before everyone else (I love cake & especially frosting). So many movies with great scenes involving food.

I just realized we have the same theme on our blogs! How funny is that! My favorite is still the gypsy, Johnny Depp and Pontoof the kangaroo in Chocolat!

    Best movie ever!

The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. Not just the best food movie, but also one of the greatest films ever made in general.

I think it has to be the crying cake scene from Like Water for Chocolate. Brilliant!!

Mine is definitely Julie & Julia – something about how Meryl Streep just brought Julia Child to life – I could watch that over and over again. My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a close second…

oh no! I responded to this and my comment is gone. I’ll try again. Big Night is the best foodie movie! You have to see it.

Great question & wonderful answers! My first thought was Simply Irresistible with Sarah Michelle Gellar. But Julie & Julia comes in as a close second. And as for My Big Fat Greek Wedding, while I initially didn’t think of it as a food movie, it definitely is one of my top favorite movies in general!

When you think about it, what doesn’t revolved around food? There are so many great movies with awesome food scenes!

I enjoyed Tampopo. It’s a Japanese film about a lorry driver and a noodle bar owner trying to find the perfect noodle recipe and ingredients. It’s a bit odd – it has two theives who break into kitchens to cook meals – and quite erotic.
